Krav Maga is the official combat system of the Israeli Defense Forces and an effective system of self defense for both men and women. It relies on attacking the assailant’s soft spots and doesn’t shy away from fighting dirty to protect yourself. It emphasizes on speed and counter attacking rather than size, strength and fitness.
With a few weeks of practice anyone can learn to defend themselves with the help of Krav Maga. These moves are meant to inflict damage in life or death situations and are very instinctive, when you’re in a bad situation your body will move even before you think of defending yourself.
Here are few moves we suggest that everyone should know in order to defend themselves:
Front Kick to the Groin:
Groin is one of two areas of the body which can’t be made stronger, hence is a very vulnerable spot. When you attack someone at the groin it makes the person feel abdominal pain and nauseous. Some might say it is fighting dirty, tell that to some weak person in a dark alley getting attacked. For that person this move will save his/her life in that situation.
Instructions: Stand facing the assailant with your legs slightly apart. Your dominant leg would be behind whereas your non-dominant leg would be closer to the assailant. When you see an opening start with lifting your dominant leg pivoting at your hip. This would give you enough inertia to drive your leg to the assailant’s groin and hit him. Recoil back to your original stance to escape or defend his next move.
360 or Outside Defense:
Attackers often take aim at their targets from behind or the side by using a circular attack to slap, grab or punch. This makes it easier to grab and take a hold you making you give in to them.
Instructions: To combat this, use the side of the wrist to intercept and hit them in a similar position – by keeping your arm at a right-angle you can create a decent amount of space between yourself and the attacker.
Hammer Fist Punch:
If you aren’t a trained fighter, throwing a punch can be more harmful to yourself than your attacker. You can fracture your knuckles which basically does you no good. Instead this “hammer” like move can better for defending yourself.
Instructions: Firstly, stand in a fighting stance with your arms protecting your chest. Clasp your dominant hand into a fist, rotate your hips and move your dominant hand behind bending at your elbow making it appear like you’re about to throw a ball. Then drive your arm forward smacking him in the face with the meaty part of your fist. Finally, recoil back to your original stance to escape or defend his next move.
This move like all the others doesn’t need you to be big or muscular. All you need to do is hit the assailant repeatedly on his ribs or his stomach with your knee till he falls down and can’t fight you anymore.
Instructions: Stand in a fighting stance with your arms protecting your chest. Grab the sides of his neck and pull him down firmly. The important part is to keep him there and hold him firmly. Next, take your dominant knee and raise it up to his stomach and drive it hard with all the force you can manage to put in. You can hit him in the ribs or on the left side of the chest if you can pull him that low. The key is to repeating this move till he falls down and attack anymore. This will give you a chance to escape.
Defending Headlock from Behind:
Most attackers try to attack from behind to block your view and so that you can’t defend yourself. This technique will help you defend yourself from such an attack by getting out of the headlock.
Instructions: If someone has their right arm wrapped around your neck, grab their arm and forearm with both your hands. Next, turn your head to the left side and pin your left shoulder to his chest, in order to make space between your bodies. Then use your left leg to pivot between both your bodies when you can duck and get out of that headlock. Now you will be facing the attacker and you can attack him in the groin or face to get away.
Defending Chokehold from Front:
This move uses speed and momentum to overcome the attacker’s strength. A smaller person can do this move easily, all you need to do is get rid of his hands off you.
Instructions: If someone is choking you from the front, raise your arms from the side and form hooks with your hands and wrists. Then get hold of the assailant’s mid arm with these hooks and drive them away from your body. If their thumbs are on your throat, twist their wrists with your hands away from your body. Once their hands are off your body, attack his/her groin with a swift kick to immobilize them so that they cant respond with any aggression.
Attack from the Ground:
If the attacker pushes you on the ground and gets over you, its safe to say there is very little you can do to defend yourself. The attacker will use his own body weight to make you subdue and give in. Here an upward kick is all you can do to save yourself.
Instructions: When on the ground judge the distance and kick him hard. If he is directly above you use both your legs and drive it in his abdomen. Use your hips, thrusting them off the floor for extra power and hit him where it counts. This will give you enough time to get up and escape.
There are a lot of Krav Maga moves to defend yourself in bad situations but these are the easiest to learn for the beginners and something that everyone should know. Of course, you won’t get these moves right on the first move, so you need to practice these as much as you can before you use them in the field. We believe staying prepared is the best way to defend yourself.
